Fall Festival 2012

Halloween Image that says Happy Halloween

Calling all Dad’s.  If you are involved with The Dads’ Club or Follies, here is your first opportunity of the year to help out for a school event.  This Friday and Saturday we need you guys to help out for Fall Festival.  If you have a minute or an hour we need you.  Friday is set up starting at 3pm going all afternoon/early evening.  Saturday we need to set up starting at 9:30.  We also need guys in 60 or 90 minute blocks to help out with our booth which will be the chili cook off – you may even get some free grub out of it.  We need to fill slots from 12 noon on.  Also, we are always short handed at clean up time, 4:30-6:00, and the more bodies we have, the faster it goes.  Thanks, in advance, for stepping up.

Please reply to this email, or email jason_nyhan@yahoo.com, to let us know if you can pitch in.  Thanks, and looking forward to seeing everyone this weekend.

VW Robotics!

VW Dads Club wishes to congratulate the VW Robotics Club for their recent success at the 2011 LA Region Eagle Rock Plaza. The Verdugo Woodlands Robotics Club took third place in the tournament and won the trophy for the First Lego League Core Values. Here is how the First Lego League describes their Core Values.

Core Values

The FLL Core Values are the cornerstones of the FLL program. They are among the fundamental elements that distinguish FLL from other programs of its kind. By embracing the Core Values, participants learn that friendly competition and mutual gain are not separate goals, and that helping one another is the foundation of teamwork.

  •     We are a team.
  •     We do the work to find solutions with guidance from our coaches and mentors.
  •     We know our coaches and mentors don’t have all the answers; we learn together.
  •     We honor the spirit of friendly competition.
  •     What we discover is more important than what we win.
  •     We share our experiences with others.
  •     We display Gracious Professionalism and Coopertition™ in everything we do.
  •     We have FUN!
The VW Robotics Club is a unique partnership between Verdugo Woodlands Elementary school and Verdugo Woodlands Dads Club. The Dads Club has provided resources and most importantly encouragement and support. The Dads Club couldn’t be prouder of our Robotics Club!

Dads Club Scheduling

Apparently the Dads Club is doing a pretty good job. Now I don’t want to sound like I’m bragging when I write this but my feeling is that the Dads Club must be doing better then okay because the facility is in more demand then in recent memory. In fact I want to encourage you to go and look at the Dads Club Calendar and take a look to see how often the Dads Club is being used. Most months it’s being used at least once a day but often you will find that it is being used several times a day! The truth is that we couldn’t be happier about how much our facility is being utilized.

The Reality

So the reality of the Dads Club being used is that our space and time is limited. The guys who are organizing the calendar are running into difficulties with booking everyone’s reservations. As much as we really don’t want to the reality is that s ome folks are going to have to compromise, some folks will have to modify their plans, and some folks will have to cancel plans. All of this is tough to swallow but (again) the reality of the situation is that the Dads Club has gone from being a under utilized facility to a hyper utilized facility.

Here are some of the groups/programs that use the Dads Club

  • VW Orchestra
  • Taiko Drum Lessons
  • Boy Scout Troop 118
  • VW Robotics
  • Dads Club Art Classes
  • Kids Homework Workshop
  • K-2 Music
  • Fall Festival
  • Survivor Challenge
  • Founders Day
  • Pancake Breakfast
  • Fathers’ Follies
  • Many more

Our Suggestion

Plan early and make reservations early. We hope that everyone understands that while the Dads Club works very closely with Verdugo Woodlands Elementary School, VW PTA, W.A.V.E we are not privy to the conversations and plans until sometimes much later in the year. The Dads Club does our best to prioritize the Dads Club Programs and Verdugo Woodlands Elementary School programs above other outside rentals but we can only do that when we have good solid information in the form of reservations.  Please check with the Dads Club before you make any plans on using the Dads Club. Please understand that 99% of all activities are either Dads Club or VW Eleementary programs.

The Moral

The moral of the story is to reserve the Dads Club early or don’t be surprised that it’s not available. Until you get a confirmation email from the Dads Club nothing is certain.

Sincerely

The Dads Club is very happy that the facility is in better shape then it’s been in for years and that it is in such high demand. We wish that there was a way to always make everyone happy but sometimes that’s just not possible. So we sincerely ask everyone to hang in there with us., make reservations at least 6 months out (if not more) and to be patient. Thanks for everyone’s support and consideration!
